REA Card employees donate microscope to Cameroon

At the REA Card Christmas party in December 2009, our employees donated the considerable sum of EUR 600.75 to the St. Thomas Hospital in Cameroon. This meant that the hospital, which provides patients in need with free treatment, was able to afford a new microscope for its laboratory. After a long journey by van and strict customs inspections, it finally reached its destination in the African rainforest at the beginning of March.

Many patients have a high fever when they are admitted to St. Thomas. They will usually be suffering from malaria, a worm infection or tuberculosis. The exact diagnosis, however, can only be made with a microscope. And once such a diagnosis has been made, the patient can undergo successful treatment.

The new microscope helps around 20 Cameroonian patients every day. In most cases, they will be given a diagnosis immediately after their examination and treatment can commence straight away.
